In all, Garland spent 89 days in four different hospitals. When he returned to Oklahoma, he asked to see Jay’s wife. “I told her about my visit to heaven, and described what Jay looks like now,” he recalls. “Seeing Jay and visiting heaven gave me a kind of peace and eternal perspective that’s hard to describe. “So much of what happened during and after the accident, was a result of my partnership with KCM, as well as the things I’ve learned through the ministry. I practiced learning to live by faith believing God for motorcycles. Years ago, I got a card in a Partner Letter from KCM that said: Believe and Receive. I put that card on my desk next to a picture of the motorcycle I’d prayed to receive. Every day, when I looked at that picture and the card, I confessed that I believed I received the motorcycle. Patty and I were at a motorcycle shop one day when she said, ‘Honey, they have the motorcycle you’ve been praying for. The exact colors.’ Someone had bought it and returned it. I got a whale of a deal on it. “I attended the second KCM motorcycle rally and kept going back. One year, I heard a big, old biker—a rough dude who had been born again—give his testimony while just weeping. It was Mac Gober, who went on to do wonderful things for the Lord. I thought, I want to win more guys like that to the Lord. We started our motorcycle ministry, The Priesthood, and when KCM stopped hosting their rally, our group was big enough that we helped provide security for Jerry Savelle’s motorcycle rally, Chariots of Light.” A Step of Faith In the weeks and months following the accident, Garland used his faith every step of the way. When surgeons removed the screws from his ankle, he was told, “You’re going to limp.” “No, I’m not,” he replied. “I don’t have a limp,” Garland says, “I’m in better shape today than I was at the time of the accident. In January 2017, Julie, Jennie and I flew to the last three corners: Cape Flattery, Wash.; Imperial Beach, Calif.; Key West, Fla.; and finished my assignment of claiming the four corners of the U.S. and the land between for the kingdom of God. “For 11 years, we hosted a motorcycle rally,” Garland says. “Being from Oklahoma, we added a rodeo to ours. In addition to being a pastor, I travel and minister at motorcycle rallies and ministries. We go after hardcore people. A few weeks ago, we had a rough, old biker, his wife and his daughter come to the Lord. He was a One Percenter, considered to be the bad boys of motorcycle riding. They live, eat and breathe motorcycles. They need Jesus, and motorcycles give us something in common.” Garland didn’t lose his desire to ride motorcycles following the accident, but he told the Lord he would give up riding if that was God’s desire. “It was the hardest prayer I ever prayed,” says Garland. “But God let me ride again, and I bought a new 2017 Street Glide Special Harley-Davidson®. My first, longer ride was in June, when I rode it to Branson, Mo. “Along with the members of my church, I felt that on the one-year anniversary of the accident, I should go back to the place where the devil tried to take me out and thank God. A year after the accident, I stood on the very place where I had almost died. But now I was worshiping and praising God, and picking up pieces of my motorcycle that still littered the landscape. Standing there, I declared Romans 8:11, ‘But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you’ ("New King James Version"). God has proven His faithfulness to me over and over. All praise and glory to Him!” V 14 : BVOV
