That’s why in the New Testament accounts of His earthly ministry, we frequently see Him talking to things. Take the time He went to Simon Peter’s house, for example. When He got there and found Peter’s mother-in-law sick with a serious fever, “He stood over her, and rebuked the fever” (Luke 4:39). Although most people would laugh at the idea that fevers can hear, this one clearly did because “it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.” On another occasion, we find Jesus speaking to the natural elements of the earth. You probably remember the story. Jesus was crossing the Sea of Galilee with His disciples one night when: ...there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! (Matthew 8:24-27). Let me ask you something: Can wind hear? Can water hear? Yes, it’s obvious they can because they heard Jesus...and the minute they did, the storm was over. “Yeah, but Brother Copeland, that was Jesus! He’s the eternal Son of God.” Yes, He is. But that is not the reason the storm responded to Him. It would have obeyed the disciples too if they had talked to it like He did. Jesus told them as much when He asked them why they had such little faith. What He was saying was, “Why did you have to wake Me up? Why didn’t you just use your faith and take care of the storm yourselves?” If you want further confirmation of this, look at what happened in Mark 11:13-14. There we see Jesus, once again, talking to something. This time it’s a fig tree. “And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet. And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.” I know I’m being repetitive here, but to drive home the point, let me ask you one more time. Can trees hear? Yes, they can. In fact, not only can they hear, they can talk. This particular fig tree was saying to Jesus, “You’re not getting any food from me today.” But instead of just walking away and letting the fig tree have the last word like most other people would, Jesus answered that tree. How did He know what His answer should be? He listened down on the inside of Him, heard what His Father was saying, and repeated it. That’s the way Jesus always operated.
