He saw a crowd of people looking at him. Though he couldn’t see them, he sensed that Patty, his father and uncle were among them.
The glory of God was so bright Garland had to put his hand up to shield his eyes. He’d never seen light so bright, or felt peace so deep. Nothing hurt. No aches or pain. Sound manifested itself not only to the ear, but to the eye, causing waves of color to swirl in and out of the crowd of witnesses.
Suddenly, someone stepped out of the crowd and walked toward him.
“Roaming Buffalo!”
Garland cried as he recognized Jay Swallow. Dressed in native regalia with beautiful beadwork, Jay was young with thick, curly, black hair. Joy creased both men’s faces as they rushed to one another with open arms.
“I was at home that evening, when I realized I hadn’t heard from Dad,” Jennie Morrison, Garland’s youngest daughter, recalls. “He’d called every night since he left on tour. Later, Julie McIntosh, his oldest daughter, received the call telling us about the accident. Our family, our church and The Priesthood Motorcycle Ministry all began praying. HAPN mobilized hundreds of people to pray.
“When the ambulance reached him, Dad was bleeding to death. They didn’t know it at the time, but his spleen was ruptured. He died twice on the way to the hospital. When they got him into surgery, the surgeon said his spleen was shattered. He died on the operating table and had to be resuscitated again.
“The surgeon explained later that he didn’t think Dad was going to live. He had said to those assisting him, ‘we’re losing him!’ when the atmosphere in the room suddenly changed. A Christian, he knew it was the presence of God and that Garland was going to live, because people were praying!
“They only had 19 units of his blood type in the hospital and gave all of it to Dad. Having stabilized him, they put him in a helicopter to fly him to the trauma center in Billings, Mont. Dad died again in the helicopter before they left. They rushed him back to the ER to resuscitate and stabilize him, then loaded him back onto the helicopter.”
