On the other hand, if we refuse to obey Jesus’ command to walk in love, our faith will falter. We won’t be able to believe for and receive all God’s BLESSINGS. Instead, we’ll start to experience the effects of the curse. It will start coming upon us and overtaking us, not because God is punishing us, but because the curse is still out there, and it will come on anyone who isn’t protected from it by the faith which worketh by love.
This is why Jesus taught what He did about forgiveness. It’s why, in Mark 11, when He was teaching on the prayer of faith He said: “What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses” (verses 24-25).
Unforgiveness violates the law of love. Therefore, faith won’t work in an unforgiving heart. The unforgiveness poisons the faith.
“Well,” someone might say, “that may be true, but I feel like I have a right to be mad at certain people in my life. They’ve treated me so badly I don’t have any desire to forgive them.”
Then you’d better go to your heavenly Father and ask Him to help you deal with your disobedient attitude. You need to repent and receive the grace you need to forgive, because your refusal to do so is having a deadly effect on you.
To understand what I mean, think about it in physical terms. Think about what you would do, for example, if you developed a problem with your heart and when you went to the doctor he identified a food that was poisoning you. When he said to you, “Stop eating that! Your body is reacting badly to it and it’s destroying your heart!” how would you respond?
