Call Sign: Shadow by Melanie Hemry Pete Ford gazed out the cockpit at the snow-tipped peaks of the Rocky Mountains below. For some people, flying meant strapping themselves in an aircraft. But for Pete, flying was a full-body experience. It felt as though the plane was strapped onto him. He banked, making a stomach-dropping turn before soaring straight up—so high he could almost touch the face of God. There, soaring far beyond the confines of earth, Pete sensed God’s presence in a more tangible way than in the holiest of cathedrals. He’d applied to the Air Force Academy to get a college degree. It had proven to be much more than a means to an end. He had found his passion. His call. Pete understood a lot about the call of God. His father, Ken Ford, had answered God’s call to pastor. Pete knew he had a call on his life as well. He’d always assumed that, like his father, one day he would be a pastor. But alone with the Lord in the holy hush of flight, he knew that wasn’t his calling. 'I’ve called you as a warrior,' the Lord had whispered. BVOV : 13
