Beyond the Flames by Melanie Hemry A second-year theater major, Desiree Kerns left class on a humid Illinois afternoon with a stack of books and enough homework to negate any hope for dinner and a movie. Back home, she dropped her books and sorted through the mail. Opening an envelope, her mouth dropped open in surprise at the amount on the check inside.
