tree, redeeming us from the curse: "for
it is written, Cursed is every one that
hangeth on a tree" (Galatians 3:13).
Jesus actually went to hell for our
sakes! He went there as our substitute
and suffered the pangs of death "that
through death he might destroy him
that had the power of death, that is, the
devil; and deliver them who through
fear of death were all their lifetime
subject to bondage" (Hebrews 2:14-15).
When you look at it in that light,
you don't have to wonder why God
calls fear "evil." Wherever we allow
it into our lives—whether in the area
of relationships, finances or health—
it makes Jesus' sacrif ice of no effect
in that area. It disconnects us from
the immeasurably precious gif t of
God's grace.
I once asked The LORD to define
the word grace for me. He said, It's My
overwhelming desire to treat you as if you' d
never sinned. When we choose to worry
and doubt we frustrate that desire. Even
though we're born again and headed for
heaven, fear will cause us to think like
sinners and cut ourselves off from the
heavenly BLESSINGS God intends for
us to enjoy here on earth.
That's why Jesus spoke so firmly to
Jairus about it. Jairus was facing a life-
or-death situation. He had only one
daughter, about 12 years of age, and she
lay dying (Luke 8:42). Believing Jesus
could heal her, Jairus asked Him to
come to his house and lay His hands on
her. Jesus agreed, but on the way to the
house, as a crowd of people pressed in
around Him, He was delayed.
A woman having an issue of blood
twelve years, which had spent all her
living upon physicians, neither could
be healed of any, came behind him,
and touched the border of his garment:
and immediately her issue of blood
stanched. And Jesus said, Who touched
me? When all denied, Peter and they
that were with him said, Master, the
multitude throng thee and press thee,
and sayest thou, Who touched me?
And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched
me: for I perceive that virtue is gone
