He said, ‘You’ve got to hear this guy preach.’ As I listened, I realized there was a big difference between what Kenneth Copeland taught and what I was being taught at seminary, where some professors made God sound schizophrenic. “The Lord told me He wanted me to study under Kenneth Copeland. We didn’t have money for an Internet connection so we went to our church bookstore and picked out one of his series called Developing Friendship With God. It cost $20, which we didn’t have. Saving a little here and a little there, it took Amy four months to get $20. She bought the series for my birthday and we listened to it over and over. Through this, we learned that it was possible to go to college debt free. We also learned about Oral Roberts University and felt led to go there. I transferred my credits and we moved to Tulsa, Okla., one year later.” Both companies they worked for had offices in Oklahoma, but God had a different plan. He told Shaun to sign up for an internship rather than get another job. “How can I do that?” Shaun asked. “We only have enough money for half of my tuition.” The Lord directed Amy to apply for a job at ORU. She was hired the morning Shaun’s tuition was due. “Is your husband a student here?” “Yes.” “Since you’re an employee, he’ll get half off his tuition.” The fall foliage fell off the trees that winter, leaving Tulsa looking dismal against a dark, brooding sky. As the holidays approached, Shaun and Amy had no money to go home to Minnesota. To make matters worse, Christmas Eve was Amy’s birthday—the first one she would spend without her family. Amy’s parents had adopted three children, then after 14 years of marriage, her mom found out she was pregnant with Amy. Amy had grown up the youngest of four children in a close-knit family on a farm in Minnesota. Her aunt had led her to the Lord when she was 14, and soon after she’d been called to the ministry. For Amy, nothing about moving to Tulsa had surprised her except the depth of her longing for her family. It had been excruciating. On Christmas Eve, a frigid wind rattled their windows as Amy wept. Shaun rubbed her back and said the only words of comfort he knew. “It’ll be worth it all for the call.” Shortly after that, the Lord appeared to Shaun in a vision one night. Jesus took him outside. When Shaun looked up at the sky, rather than stars, he saw the line of a time graph that had many ups and downs. The Lord explained to him that this was the history of man since Adam and Eve. Jesus pointed to a red line that intersected the graph as it headed down. Jesus said, 'This is when I’m returning.' Then He pointed just barely above the red line and said, 'This is where you are right now in history.' Shaun responded, “Lord, it’s too soon! Too many people don’t know You yet!” Jesus answered back, 'Yes, that’s why I’ve called you.' “We’d become Partners with KCM and gave offerings to them above our tithe. Even with half of Shaun’s tuition paid, we had to believe God for the rest of the money every semester. One semester we needed $3,000,” Amy recalled. “A woman in Minnesota sent us a check for that amount. She said the Lord told her in prayer that we needed it. “Another time a check came in for the amount we needed from Shaun’s previous employer. He said he’d decided to disperse the funds in Shaun’s retirement account. Shaun never knew he had one.” The Path to Success Shaun sat in class and listened to a seasoned professor give advice. “Where most young ministers miss it—is they launch their own ministry right out of college. They want to be the head person right away,” the professor said. “But it greatly increases longevity if the minister submits to another man’s ministry first. Especially under someone who has success.” 16 : BVOV
