The fire snapped and crackled against the night sky. “Amy, is the Lord speaking to you?” Shaun asked. “Yes.” “Is He talking to you about moving to Rochester, Minn., to pastor a church?” “Yes.” “Me, too.” “We knew we were called to pastor a church in Rochester,” Shaun recalls. “But we also realized that we could get out of God’s timing and still miss His plan. Instead of jumping out and moving to Rochester, we started praying over God’s timing. We both sensed that we were to move in the fall of 2008, which gave us two more years at KCM. We prayed that God would confirm this church plant was really coming from Him.” One night while they were waiting on God’s timing, Shaun had a vivid dream. In it he walked into the main building at KCM and saw a piece of paper on the floor. He picked it up and threw it in the trash. Then the Lord spoke: 'Because you have treated this like it was your own father’s ministry, I’m promoting you into your own.' In the second part of the dream, a Bible opened and Shaun read 1 Timothy 1:12 ("New King James Version"). Two words in the passage were in bold print. “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has ENABLED me, because He counted me FAITHFUL, putting me into the ministry.” On Oct. 30, 2008, a full 10 years after Shaun had accepted his call into the ministry, God sent him and Amy from Texas to Rochester, where they started with a five-week marriage conference. Then, in March 2009, they launched High Point Church with only 17 people in attendance. By the end of the first year, they had 30 members. “We didn’t despise those small beginnings,” Shaun explains. “Word of faith churches have struggled in this area. We were told none had ever made it much past 100 in attendance and that most had closed their doors, but we and our congregation persevered. There were nights of prayers and tears when we had to remind ourselves that God had told us to do this and we couldn’t give up. We have really been able to see the fruit of patience now, with many coming to Christ and faithful, talented people joining us in this vision from the Lord. “This area is an international hub because of the Mayo Clinic. Kings and world leaders come here, along with as many as 1.3 million people each year. Many seek spiritual as well as medical help. So we make the central focus of every event about reaching people for Christ.” Today, seven years after starting the church, it is going stronger than ever. More than 500 people now call High Point Church home. They recently opened a new building and have two services on Sunday. Shaun and Amy believe this is all just the groundwork for what God is yet to do. “College taught me about homiletics and hermeneutics, but partnership with KCM opened a whole new world to us, teaching us how to obtain victory in real-life situations that look impossible. “God once spoke to me,” shares Shaun, 'Too many churches are looking for ways to get money in, rather than looking for ways to get the gospel out.' At High Point Church, people are receiving eternal life. Through the church and outreach ministries, they have seen over 3,000 come to Christ so far. The hearts of the fathers and children are being turned to God and each other as Malachi 4:6 illuminates. Marriages and families are being healed. If that weren’t blessing enough, their own family has grown to include three children: Courtney, 12; Whitney, 8; and Caleb, 5. When Pastors Shaun and Amy Gustafson look back over the challenges of the past 18 years, one thing is clear—it was worth it all for the call. V 18 : BVOV
