Nothing to Fear

Not long after the terrorist attack on America, Sept. 11, 2001, Ken and I traveled to Europe to preach. While we were there I picked up an English newspaper and saw a most peculiar article. At first glance I couldn’t figure out why on earth they’d printed it.
The article was all about plagues! It talked about the bubonic plague, and all kinds of other plagues that had stricken mankind over the centuries. It explained how many people died, how long a person could live after first being exposed, and what the symptoms were. The gruesome details filled an entire half page of the paper.
By the time I finished the article I was disgusted and perplexed. What good could such information do for anyone? I wondered.
A few days later, the answer dawned on me. The article was intended to prepare people for the possibility of biological warfare. It was a shocking realization. Who would have thought, even 30 or 40 years ago, that we’d ever have to face such a threat? Who could have anticipated—much less prepared for—the day when diseases would be used as weapons of mass destruction?
