I couldn't think of a higher purpose for me than to be there for him and help him." —John Copeland Putting the Pieces Back Together Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king's horses and all the king's mencouldn't put Humpty together again. I feel certain many of you can recall these lyrics from the classic English nursery rhyme about an egg-shaped character that meets its unfortunate demise after falling off a wall and being shattered into an untold number of pieces. What I wonder, though, is this: Am I the ONLY one ever to have been awakened at 2:30 in the morning with the words to this simple little nursery rhyme dancing in his head? Not long ago, that's where I found myself— quietly lying in bed, aimlessly staring at the clock, and unable to return to sleep as those words danced through my head. A giant egg sitting on a wall suddenly falls to the ground and is shattered into so many pieces, its life destroyed. Why should I care, I wondered? It's not even real! Then, in my spirit, I heard the word potter. The Lord reminded me of something the prophet Jeremiah saw after he obeyed God's instruction to "go down to the potter's house." Here's what Jeremiah 18:3-4, The Message, says: "So I went to the potter's house, and sure enough, the potter was there, working away at his wheel. Whenever the pot the potter was working on turned out badly, as sometimes happens when you are working with clay, the potter would simply start over and use the same clay to make another pot." Then, in verses 5-6, he wrote: "Then God's Message came to me: 'Can't I do just as this potter does, people of Israel?… In the same way that this potter works his clay, I work on you, people of Israel.'" In the New Living Translation, verse 6 says: "O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand." That's the Lord's attitude toward you and me today. Not only does He have the ability, but God desires to mend broken hearts, restore relationships, heal emotional wounds, and rebuild broken lives. No matter how messed up we are, no matter how broken or shattered we may feel our lives have become, the Potter—the One who shaped and formed us in His very own image—can and will put us back together.
