In Mark 10, a rich young ruler asked Jesus,
"What must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus
told him to sell all he had and give it to the poor.
The Bible says the man "went away grieved:
for he had great possessions" (verse 22). In the
next verse, Jesus turned to His disciples and
said, "How hardly shall they that have riches
enter into the kingdom of God!"
This statement left the disciples perplexed.
Scripture tells us that they asked each other,
"Who then can be saved?" (verse 26).
But Jesus didn't say to the disciples that it
was impossible for the rich to enter heaven—
only diŠ cult. Why? Because rich people
usually trust in their riches more than they
trust in their God.
Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto
you, There is no man that hath left house, or
brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or
wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the
gospel's, but he shall receive an hundredfold
now in this time, houses, and brethren, and
sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands,
with persecutions; and in the world to come
eternal life (verses 29-30, emphasis mine).
