Editor’s Letter The True Guide Not long ago, I watched as a visually impaired man navigated his way down a busy, crowded sidewalk. From his right hand he extended a long, white cane—tapping the pavement as he walked to ensure he didn’t walk into anyone or anything. In his left hand, he held onto a leash that was attached to what I assumed was his guide dog. Watching this man successfully make his way through busy sidewalk traffic, I wondered: How is it that people with such special needs trust their safety and their lives to animals or a walking cane? Then, I realized: It’s because of faith. They acknowledge their need—that they can’t see to safely get where they need to go. They need someone or something they can trust to safely guide them. That’s what the Bible means in 2 Corinthians 5:7, where it says, “We walk by faith, not by sight.” Just like the visually impaired rely on the help of a guide, whether it’s a trained dog, a friend or a family member, we need the guidance of our heavenly Father. Jesus says the Holy Spirit will, if you trust Him to do so, “guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). God knows everything about us, including where we’re headed (Psalm 121:8). While we’re wondering what step to take next, He knows if it’s the right step, and whether it is the right time to take it. He will order our steps so we don’t go the wrong way (Psalm 119:133). With all that confronts us in the world today and the decisions we must make, it’s comforting to know there is Someone always standing beside and in front of us—ready to accompany and lead us in the right direction. In their 55 years of ministry, Kenneth and Gloria Copeland have never asked anyone for a place to preach. Throughout the years, however, it had always been a desire of Kenneth’s, who himself is part Cherokee, to someday preach to his native people.
