Editor’s Letter Stop and Rest! You may recall the bath soap commercial from the late ’70s in which, after contemplating the busyness of her world—including “the traffic, the boss, the baby, the dog”—a young woman desperately screams: “That does it. Calgon, take me away!” Obviously, she’s hoping for relief from a stressful situation—an escape from her present troubles and burdens. Likely she’s thinking, Stop the world, I want to get off! It is easy to have those feelings when there’s chaos all around and you don’t have control over any of it. You think, Just one more thing and I’m going to explode! We’re halfway through 2021, and the COVID-19 pandemic that struck in March last year is still lingering. Also ongoing are the debates regarding various precautions recommended as safeguards against the spread of the contagious disease. We all just want to get back to living life as normal. We want to see light at the end of the tunnel—light that spells an end to the hardship, devastation and adversity that have resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives, destroyed families and literally changed the way we live—likely forever. Yes, we’re tired and frustrated. But, though it may sound good, something as simple as a soothing bath is not our answer. God doesn’t deal in pipe dreams. He won’t give us false hope, like the unrealistic promise that a bath soap will wash away all our troubles. What He does is give us His peace in times of trouble and distress. With a kind but firm voice, He says, “Stop. Rest. I’ve got this!” He beckons us to Himself, saying, “Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest” (Matthew 11:28, "The Message"). Stop and rest. That’s what Jesus did when He grew tired (Mark 4:38). It’s also what He advised His disciples to do, knowing they were tired from ministering to the crowds of people (Mark 6:31). There is light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s about to break through. Meanwhile, God has provided us His peace, comfort and rest.
