It’s our own words that have been working against us! We’ve been opening the door ourselves to those cursed situations by what we’ve been saying with our own mouths.
That doesn’t mean the devil isn’t involved, of course. He’s the thief who comes to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). But he doesn’t have the power to do that just on his own. Jesus stripped him of his power through the cross and the resurrection. So, for the devil to successfully enforce his evil will in our lives, he has to deceive us into letting him do it. He has to trick us into letting him get hold of our words.
Why are our words so important?
Because this is a word-created, word-upheld universe: God created it with words (Hebrews 11:3). Jesus is upholding it by The WORD of His power (Hebrews 1:3), and He declared in Mark 11:23-24 that we have whatever we believe and say.
“For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things…. [And] every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned” (Matthew 12:34-37).
